Manifesto

Lunaro Architects

We draw less, so buildings say more.

Lunaro is a studio of eleven architects and makers in Lisbon. Since 2009 we have completed forty-two buildings in Portugal and Spain — houses, galleries, schools and one pavilion on the river. We take on few projects, stay with each one from first sketch to handover, and design for the light a building will have in fifty years.

(04)

Approach

How we work

Four steps. No shortcuts.

Every project moves through the same four stages, whatever its size. It keeps the work honest and the budget visible.

01

01

Listen

We walk the site with you at different hours, measure the light and write a brief together before anything is drawn.

2–4 weeks

02

02

Draw

Sections first, then plans. Sketches, physical models and a cost plan, revised until every room has a reason.

3–6 months

03

03

Test

Light models at 1:20, sun studies and carbon counts. We submit for licensing and tender to contractors we trust.

6–12 months

04

04

Build

Weekly site visits, every detail approved on site, and a handover that includes a manual for the building’s first decade.

12–18 months

(05) Studies in light

Every room is a negotiation with the sun.

Frames from site visits and handovers. Two of them show what was there before we arrived — drag the red handle to compare.
